The Role of a Professional School Counselor
Professional school counselors serve a vital role in maxmizng student success. He or she promotes leadership, advocacy, collaboratoin, and equality. Professional school counselors support a safe learning environment and work to safeguard the human rights of all members of the school community and address the needs of all students.
Professional school counselors focus on three main areas:
- Academic Development - School counselors implement strategies to support and maximize each student's ability to learn.
- Career Development - School counselors help students understand the connections between school and the world of work, and plan for and make a successful transition from school to post-secondary education and/or the world of work.
- Social/Emotional Development - School counselors help students manage emotions and learn and apply interpersonal skills.

What does a professional school counselor do on an average day?
- Developmental classroom guidance and prevention instruction
- Classroom advising (high school planning/college and career readiness)
- Individual advsing (high school planning/college and career readiness)
- Individual counseling
- Group counseling
- College and career readiness assessment
- Parent/Guardian communication
- Collaboration with school staff
- Collaboration with outside human service and mental health agencies
- Advising for student groups (such as SADD, Mentoring Program, etc.)
